Early Life and Music Journey
Fay-Ann grew up in Point Fortin, Trinidad. Her parents are both well-known in the music world. Her father is Austin Lyons, also known as Superblue, and her mother is Lynette Steele, known as Lady Gypsy. Her aunt is Winston "Gypsy" Peters, who is also a famous musician.
Making History in Soca Music
Fay-Ann has won the Carnival Road March in Trinidad and Tobago three times: in 2003, 2008, and 2009. This award is for the most popular song played during the Carnival parade. In 2009, she made history by winning the International Soca Monarch competition. She was the first woman to win the "Power" category. She also won the "Groovy" and "People's Choice" awards that same year. This made her the first artist to win all three major soca titles in one Carnival season.
She achieved this amazing feat while she was pregnant! This made her the first and only woman to do so. Fay-Ann is also the youngest solo artist to win the Carnival Road March multiple times. She is the only female artist to win it three times. She also had back-to-back wins in 2008 and 2009.
Family and Performances
Fay-Ann and her husband, Bunji Garlin, welcomed their daughter on February 28, 2009. This was just a few weeks after her big Carnival wins. Fay-Ann has performed at many music events around the world. She has been on stage in Washington D.C., at BET's 106 & Park, and at huge festivals like Coachella and Glastonbury Festival. She has also performed in London and at the Berlin Carnival in Germany.
Fay-Ann holds the record for the most upbeat soca songs released by a female artist. She has released 28 up-tempo soca songs, which is more than any other female soca musician.
Music Groups and Songwriting
Fay-Ann is currently a member of the Asylum band. Her husband, Bunji Garlin, started this band. Before that, she was a lead singer for a band called Invazion. She performed with Invazion at many concerts, including the famous 'Brass Festival'. This festival was a musical competition between popular soca bands during the Carnival season.
Writing Her Own Hits
Fay-Ann writes many of her own songs. She learned this skill from her father, Superblue. Her father has won the Carnival Road March nine times and the Trinidad Soca Monarch seven times. Fay-Ann's songs have won many awards from the Copyright Music Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago (COTT). These include Female Songwriter of the Year.
