The Federal Chancellor (also known as Bundeskanzler, Chancelier fédéral, Cancelliere della Confederazione, or Chancelier federal) is a very important person in the government of Switzerland. Think of them as the chief of staff for the country's main governing body, the Federal Council. The Federal Council has seven members who lead the country.
Even though the Federal Chancellor is super important, they are not actually one of the seven government members. Their job is to lead the Federal Chancellery. This office helps the Federal Council do its work smoothly, like a general staff helps a team.

Electing the Federal Chancellor
The Federal Chancellor is chosen by the Federal Assembly. This is like the Swiss parliament. They are elected for a four-year term. This term can be renewed, meaning they can be elected again.
The first Federal Chancellor was Jean-Marc Mousson, who started in 1803. The person holding this role right now is Walter Thurnherr. He began his term on January 1, 2016.
