Exploring Our Feelings
This wonderful picture book was both written and drawn by Aliki Brandenberg. The book shows children experiencing many different emotions. Imagine seeing pictures of kids feeling happy, sad, angry, or surprised! Each page has lots of small drawings. Sometimes there are up to twenty pictures on one page. These pictures help you see what each emotion looks like. Some drawings even have short descriptions. Two friendly birds also appear in the book. They talk about the feelings shown on each page.
Featured on Reading Rainbow
The book Feelings was shown on an episode of the famous TV show Reading Rainbow. This episode first aired on June 25, 1986. Many children learned about emotions by watching this show.
Different Versions of the Book
Over the years, Feelings has been printed in a few different versions. Some copies of the book have extra pages at the beginning and end. These pages have wordless comic-strip-like stories. For example, one story shows a child who is scared of a water slide. Another shows a girl taking care of birds. There's also a story about a broken vase being fixed. And one about waking up from a bad dream. These extra stories can be found in some Mulberry and Scholastic editions.
Cover Changes and Updates
Older Mulberry editions from 1986 have a "Reading Rainbow Book" logo. This logo is usually found in the bottom right corner of the cover. Scholastic editions from 1991 have their own logo. These Scholastic books might be stapled together. They also might not have page numbers.
A newer edition came out in 2019. It is very similar to the first book. The main change is a special note from the author inside the front cover. The cover art also looks a bit different. The title "Feelings" is now in a bigger, bubbly font. The author's name also looks bolder. The pictures on the cover are closer together. One small picture on page 31 was changed. In the original, a girl guesses a boy is showing "fat." In the new version, she guesses "Strong?" instead.
