Felipe Diricksen facts for kids

Felipe Diricksen (born 1590, died 1679) was a famous Spanish painter. He was also known as Diriksen or Deriksen. He lived during the Baroque period, which was a time of grand and dramatic art. Felipe mostly painted portraits of people and religious scenes. His family had many artists from Flanders, a region in Europe.
Early Life and Royal Service
Felipe Diricksen was born in 1590 in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain. His grandfather was Anton van den Wyngaerde, also known as Antonio de las Viñas. Felipe's father, Rodrigo Diricksen, was also a painter.
Even though he grew up for a time in Oudenburg, Felipe settled in Spain when he was still a child. When he was 20, he married Ana Oliver y Bobadilla.
Painter for the King
In 1612, Felipe Diricksen began working for King Philip III of Spain. He became an official court painter, meaning he painted for the royal family. This was a very important job!
In 1620, he painted a special portrait of King Philip III in Lisbon. This painting showed the king at an important ceremony. You could even see the city of Lisbon in the background of the painting.
Later Years and Family
Felipe continued to be a court painter for many years, until at least 1639. He was still connected to the royal court even in 1678.
Felipe Diricksen had eight children. One of his sons, Gabriel, also became a painter, following in his father's footsteps. In his later years, Felipe mostly painted religious artworks. He also taught others how to paint.
