Who Was Philip I of Castile?
Philip I of Castile was born in 1478 and passed away in 1506. He was often called Philip the Handsome or Philip the Fair because of his good looks. Philip was a very important figure because he was the first ruler from the powerful Habsburg family to become King of Castile.
His father was Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, a very influential ruler in Europe. Philip married Joanna of Castile, who was the daughter of the famous Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. This marriage was a big deal because it helped connect the Habsburg family with the Spanish royal family.
Philip became King of Castile in 1506, ruling alongside his wife, Joanna. However, his reign was very short, lasting only a few months before he died. Even though his time as king was brief, he started the Habsburg line of kings in Spain, which would rule for many years.
Who Was Philip I of Portugal?
The other king known as Felipe I was Philip I of Portugal. He was born in 1527 and died in 1598. You might know him better as Philip II of Spain. This is because he was already the King of Spain when he also became King of Portugal.
Philip II of Spain was a very powerful monarch. In 1580, he successfully claimed the throne of Portugal. This event created what is known as the Iberian Union. For about 60 years, Spain and Portugal were ruled by the same king, even though they kept their own separate laws and governments.
During his long reign, Philip II (or Philip I of Portugal) ruled over a vast empire that stretched across the globe. He was a central figure in European politics and played a big part in the history of both Spain and Portugal.
