Felipe de Cáceres was an important Spanish conquistador and a governor in a region called Rio de la Plata. A conquistador was a Spanish explorer and soldier who helped Spain claim new lands in the Americas.
Becoming Governor
Even though the people in a city called Asunción wanted Juan Ortiz de Zárate to be their new leader, a special court called the Royal Audience in Charcas chose Felipe de Cáceres instead. He was appointed to replace Francisco Ortiz de Vergara as the governor of the Rio de la Plata.
Before becoming governor, Felipe de Cáceres had helped Domingo Martínez de Irala. They worked together to remove Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca from his position of power.
Conflict and Arrest
During his time as governor, Felipe de Cáceres had a big disagreement with Fray Pedro de la Torre. Fray Pedro de la Torre was the first bishop of Paraguay.
After a trip to the mouth of the Paraná River, Governor de Cáceres returned to Asunción. When he arrived, he was stopped and arrested. The bishop had ordered his arrest.
The viceroy (a high-ranking official representing the king) named Martin Suarez de Toledo approved the arrest. The viceroy then ordered that Felipe de Cáceres be sent to Spain.
Escape and Recapture
On his way to Spain, Felipe de Cáceres managed to escape from jail. He got help from some Portuguese people. However, a captain named Ruy Diaz Melgarejo was able to catch him again.
