Who Was Felix Hamrin?
Felix Hamrin was born in Mönsterås, a town in Kalmar County, Sweden. His father worked as a dealer in leather. In 1900, Felix married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Pennycock. They had seven children together.
Early Life and Career
After finishing his studies at a business school in Gothenburg, Felix Hamrin started his own wholesale business. He ran this business in Jönköping from 1903 to 1930.
He began his political career at 37 years old. He became a member of the Riksdag, which is Sweden's parliament. Before becoming Prime Minister, he held several important government jobs.
Important Government Roles
From 1926 to 1928, Felix Hamrin served as the Minister of Commerce and Industry. This role meant he was in charge of trade and business for the country.
Later, from 1930 to 1932, he became the Minister of Finance. In this job, he was responsible for managing Sweden's money and economy.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 1932, the Prime Minister at the time, Carl Gustaf Ekman, had to resign. This happened because of a major financial problem known as the "Kreuger crash." This crash caused big problems for many businesses and the economy.
Because of this, Felix Hamrin became the new Prime Minister in August 1932. However, his time in office was very short.
Shortest Term in Office
Felix Hamrin resigned after the general election in 1932. His party, the Freeminded People's Party, did not do well in the election. His term as Prime Minister lasted only 50 days. This makes his time in office the shortest for any Prime Minister in Sweden's history.
Later Political Work
After his time as Prime Minister, Felix Hamrin briefly led the Freeminded People's Party. He also helped lead the newly formed People's Party until a new leader was chosen in 1935.
From 1930 to 1937, he also served as the governor of Jönköping County. His main political goals were to help Sweden recover from the early years of the Great Depression. He worked to fix the economy through strict spending controls and to lessen the impact of the Kreuger crash.
Felix Hamrin passed away in Jönköping on November 27, 1937.
