Felix the Cat is a fun animated TV show that aired from 1958 to 1960. It stars the famous cartoon character Felix the Cat. This series was made especially for kids and introduced Felix's amazing "Magic Bag of Tricks." This special bag can change into anything Felix needs to help him in his adventures!
Each cartoon episode was split into two parts. The first part would often end with a cliffhanger, making you eager to see what happened after the commercial break! Later, another Felix series called The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat came out in 1995.
About the Show
After Otto Messmer stopped drawing the Felix newspaper comics in 1954, Joe Oriolo took over. Joe Oriolo, who also helped create Casper the Friendly Ghost, made a deal to bring Felix to television. He produced 260 short cartoons for the show.
This TV series changed things up by introducing many new characters. These characters were voiced by Jack Mercer. In most episodes, the bad guys try to steal Felix's Magic Bag. But sometimes, these villains even become Felix's friends!
The show was very popular, especially with children. It also helped introduce Felix the Cat to audiences in Japan. A Japanese version of the show aired in 1960. Years later, Felix even got his own anime series in Japan.
Meet the Characters
Here are some of the main characters you'll meet in Felix the Cat:
- Felix the Cat: He's the main hero of the show! Felix goes on many exciting adventures. His amazing Magic Bag of Tricks always helps him out of tricky situations. No matter what happens, Felix almost always ends up laughing and saying, "Righty-o!"
- The Professor: He's Felix's main enemy. The Professor is a mad scientist who is super smart but also very obsessed with getting Felix's Magic Bag. He tries all sorts of inventions and disguises, but he always fails in the end. Sometimes, when his nephew Poindexter is around, the Professor even teams up with Felix to fight the Master Cylinder. When his plans don't work, he often sighs, "Oh, what's the use!!!!!"
- Poindexter: This is the Professor's smart young nephew and one of Felix's best friends. Poindexter is a typical scientist, always wearing thick glasses, a lab coat, and a mortarboard. A special button on his lab coat can control different gadgets. He always calls Felix "Mr. Felix."
- Rock Bottom: He's the Professor's clumsy helper. Rock Bottom is a bulldog who acts and dresses like a human. He tries to help the Professor steal Felix's Magic Bag. Sometimes, he even works for the Master Cylinder. Like the Professor, he often says, "Oh, what's the use!!!!!" when his plans fail.
- Master Cylinder: This is an evil robot who looks like a cylinder. He first appeared in the episode "Master Cylinder-King of the Moon." He's always trying to kidnap Poindexter to use his smart brain to build weapons. We learn that he used to be a student of the Professor until an explosion changed him into a robot.
- Martin the Martian: A friendly Martian who helps Felix and his friends when they get into trouble in space.
- General Clang: An evil general from space who wants a special rocket formula to destroy Earth.
- Vavoom: A small, quiet, and friendly Inuit character. His only sound is a super loud shout of his own name, "VAVOOM!" This shout is so powerful it can shake the ground! But if his mouth is taped shut, he can't use his power. He first appeared in the episode "Felix and Vavoom."
Theme Song
Many people remember the show for its catchy theme song. It was written by Winston Sharples and sung by the 1950s big band singer Ann Bennett.
