Ferdinand of Castile (born 1238 – died before 1264 or 1269) was a prince, also known as an Infante, from the Kingdom of Castile. He was the son of King Ferdinand III of Castile and Joan, Countess of Ponthieu.
Ferdinand held important titles. He was the Count of Aumale and a Baron of Montgomery and Noyelles-sur-Mer. These lands were in France, which he inherited through his mother.
Early Life and Inheritance
Ferdinand was born in the year 1238. His father, King Ferdinand III of Castile, passed away in Seville in 1252. After his father's death, Ferdinand's mother, Joan of Dammartin, moved to France.
Ferdinand went with his mother to France. There, he inherited the County of Aumale. He also became the Baron of Montgomery and Noyelles-sur-Mer. These were important noble titles and lands.
When Did Ferdinand Die?
The exact date of Ferdinand's death is not known for sure. Some historians believe he died before the year 1264. Others think he passed away before July 25, 1269.
This later date is suggested because his brother, Infante Luis, made a donation in Toledo. In that document, Luis was called "Heir to the County of Pontis." This suggests Ferdinand, who would have been the heir, was no longer alive.
Family and Children
Ferdinand of Castile married a woman named Laura of Montfort. Laura was the daughter of Amaury de Montfort. Amaury was the Count of Toulouse and Lord of Montfort.
Ferdinand and Laura had one child together:
- John I of Ponthieu (died 1302). John inherited all the lands and titles from both his father and mother. He sadly died in a famous battle called the Battle of the Golden Spurs around July 11, 1302.
