Ferdinand of Portugal (also known as Fernando in Portuguese), later called Ferdinand of Eça or Eza, was born around 1378. He was an important figure in Portuguese history. Ferdinand was the son of Infant João, a Portuguese prince. His father, João, was the son of King Peter I of Portugal and a famous lady named Inés de Castro. She was known as "the Queen who ruled after her death" because of her dramatic story.
Ferdinand's father, Prince João, was born in 1349. He was officially recognized as a Prince of Portugal. He became the Duke of Valencia de Campos in Castile, a region in Spain. This happened through his marriage to Constanza de Castilla, who was the daughter of King Henry II of Castile. Prince João had first married Maria Téllez de Menezes in 1376. Sadly, she passed away shortly after in 1378. After her death, Prince João married Constanza de Castilla in 1378. Constanza became Ferdinand's stepmother and the Duchess of Valencia de Campos.
Life of Ferdinand
Ferdinand became the first Lord of Eza in Galicia. This is where he got his family name, Eça, which is the Portuguese way of saying Eza. He received this title from Fadrique de Castilla, who was the first Duke of Arjona.
