Fernanda Maria Botelho, born in 1957, is an American mathematician. She is a professor at the University of Memphis. She also helps lead the mathematics department there.
Becoming a Mathematician
Fernanda Botelho studied mathematics for many years. She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), in 1981. She then completed her Master of Science (M.Sc.) in 1985. Both of these degrees were from the Universidade do Porto in Portugal.
Advanced Studies
After her studies in Portugal, she moved to the United States. She earned her Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) in mathematics in 1988. She completed this advanced degree at the University of California at Berkeley. Her teacher and guide for her Ph.D. was a famous mathematician named Jenny Harrison.
What She Studies
Professor Botelho's work focuses on several interesting areas of mathematics. These are her main research interests:
- Functional analysis: This area looks at functions and spaces in a special way. It helps mathematicians understand complex problems.
- Operator theory: This involves studying "operators," which are like special mathematical tools. They help change one function into another.
- Dynamical systems: This field explores how things change over time. It can be used to understand everything from weather patterns to how populations grow.
Special Recognition
From 2013 to 2016, Professor Botelho held the Dunavant Professorship. This is a special honor given to professors at the University of Memphis. It shows that she is a highly respected and important member of the faculty. She has also received other awards for her work, such as the Prof Charles Morrey's Award and the Prof Gomes Teixeira Award.
