In the early 1960s, Fernando continued his family's business tradition. He started a car dealership in Ávila. This dealership sold cars from Spanish brands like Pegaso (ENASA) and British brands like British Leyland (which later became Rover).
A Leader in Business
Fernando Alcón was a respected leader in the business world. For ten years, from 1970 to 1979, he was the president of the Ávila Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This organization helps businesses in the region.
He also led the Spanish Association of Pegaso Dealers. This group represented all the dealerships that sold Pegaso cars. In addition, he was the president of FEDAUTO, which is the main federation for the automotive industry in Spain.
Entering Politics
Fernando Alcón entered politics during a special time in Spain. This period, known as the Spanish Transition, was when Spain moved from being ruled by a dictator to becoming a democracy. He joined politics because his childhood friend, Adolfo Suárez, asked him to.
In the first free democratic elections held on June 15, 1977, Fernando led the list of candidates for the Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD) party in Ávila. He was elected as a deputy, which is like a member of parliament. He achieved great success for his party, winning all three possible deputy seats from his province.
Political Success and Later Roles
Fernando Alcón ran for election again in March 1979. He was once more the top candidate for the UCD party in Ávila. He repeated his earlier success, winning all three deputy seats for the province again. This was a remarkable achievement that has not been repeated in Ávila since.
In July 1982, Adolfo Suárez created a new political party called the Democratic and Social Center (CDS). Fernando Alcón joined this new party. A few months after the June 1986 elections, he became the CDS National Organization Secretary. He held this important role until 1990.
In October 1989, he was elected as a Senator for the CDS party, representing Ávila. A Senator is another type of elected official in the Spanish parliament.
In 1991, Fernando Alcón decided to leave politics. He then went back to focusing on his business activities.
