Fernando Díaz de Haro was a Spanish nobleman from the important House of Haro family. He was the second son of Diego López V de Haro, who was the Lord of Biscay, and his wife, Violante de Castilla y Aragón. Violante was the daughter of King Alfonso X of Castile. In 1322, Fernando became the lord of Orduña and Balmaseda. He inherited these titles after his older brother, Lope Díaz IV de Haro, passed away without any children.

Fernando's Family Background

Fernando Díaz de Haro came from a powerful family. His father, Diego López V de Haro, became Lord of Biscay by taking the title. His mother was Violante de Castilla y Aragón.

His grandparents on his father's side were Diego Lopez III de Haro and Constanza de Bearn. On his mother's side, his grandparents were King Alfonso X of Castile and Queen Violant of Aragon. Queen Violant was the daughter of King James I of Aragon.

Fernando's Life Story

We don't know the exact year Fernando was born. However, we know he got married in 1315. His wife was Maria of Portugal, Lady of Meneses and Orduña. She was the daughter of Alfonso de Portugal and Violante Manuel. Violante Manuel was the sister of Juan Manuel, Prince of Villena.

When his brother died in 1322, Fernando Díaz inherited the important titles of Lord of Orduña and Balmaseda. It seems he passed these titles to his son. However, over time, these lands ended up belonging to the king. This meant that the once very powerful House of Haro family lost much of its influence. We do not know the date when Fernando Díaz de Haro died.

His Marriage and Children

Fernando Díaz married Maria of Portugal, Lady of Meneses and Orduña in 1315. Maria had been married before to Tello Alfonso de Meneses. Her father was Alfonso de Portugal. Her grandfather was Alfonso III of Portugal. Maria's mother was Violante Manuel, and her family line went back to Ferdinand III of Castile, who was known as "the saint."

Fernando and Maria had two sons:

  • Diego López VI de Haro: He inherited his father's titles over Orduña and Balmaseda. He might have been the last person from the Haro family to hold these titles. He married Juana de Castro II. She was the daughter of Pedro Fernández de Castro, who was the lord of Sarria and Lemos. Her mother was Isabel Ponce de León.
  • Pedro López de Haro: He passed away when he was young.
