Fernando Jiménez de Gregorio (born May 30, 1911 – died July 23, 2012) was a Spanish historian. He was also the official historian, known as a cronista, for the Province of Toledo. This means he was in charge of recording and writing down important events and history for that area.

A Young Historian's Life

Fernando Jiménez de Gregorio was born in a town called Belvís de la Jara, in the province of Toledo, on May 30, 1911. He finished his high school studies in Madrid in 1927. He then went on to study both Law and Philosophy and Letters at the Central University in Madrid. He earned his highest degree, a PhD, in Philosophy and Letters in 1933. His special research was about how the Spanish Parliament was called together in 1810.

He also took part in a special trip called the "University Cruise through the Mediterranean" in 1933. This was a unique educational journey for university students.

Before the Spanish Civil War, Fernando worked as a teacher in Plasencia. He even became the director of a high school there. Later, in the 1940s, he taught at a high school in Murcia and was soon asked to teach at the University of Murcia. He returned to Toledo in the 1960s. He also worked in Madrid, where he became the director of a high school called Instituto Isabel la Católica in 1976.

Fernando Jiménez de Gregorio passed away in Madrid on July 23, 2012, at the age of 101.

He wrote more than 50 books and studies. Some of his well-known works include Mi posguerra (My Post-War), Memorias de un miliciano de la cultura en Aranjuez (Memories of a Culture Militiaman in Aranjuez), and La Sagra toledana. He also wrote many books about his home region, La Jara.

Special Awards and Honors

Fernando Jiménez de Gregorio received several important recognitions for his work:

  • He was named Hijo Adoptivo (Adoptive Son) of Talavera de la Reina. This is a special honor given to someone who is not from a place but has contributed greatly to it.
  • He became a full member of the Real Academia Alfonso X el Sabio in 1957. This is a respected academy for scholars and historians.
  • He was also a full member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes y Ciencias Históricas de Toledo.
  • He was a full member of the Instituto de Estudios Madrileños.
  • He received the Commander with Plaque of the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise. This is a high honor given by the Spanish government for achievements in science, culture, and education.
