Fernando Sebastián Aguilar (born December 14, 1929 – died January 24, 2019) was an important leader in the Catholic Church from Spain. He was a Cardinal and used to be the Archbishop of Pamplona y Tudela. Pope Francis made him a cardinal in 2014. He was also a member of the Claretians, a religious group.

Early Life and Education

Fernando Sebastián Aguilar was born in Calatayud, Spain, on December 14, 1929. When he was young, he joined a religious group called the Claretians. He made his official promise to the group on September 8, 1946.

He studied philosophy and theology in seminaries, which are schools for religious training. On June 28, 1953, he became a priest. Later, in 1957, he earned a special degree called a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome.

Fernando Sebastián Aguilar was also involved in many academic activities. He was a member of the Spanish Mariological Society starting in 1959. From 1966, he directed a magazine called Revista Ephemerides Mariologicae. He also started and directed a journal called Iglesia Viva from 1966 to 1971.

He taught theology in different places. From 1967 to 1979, he was a professor and later the head (rector) of the Pontifical University of Salamanca in Spain.

Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop

Fernando Sebastián Aguilar became a bishop on August 22, 1979, for the Diocese of León. He served there until July 28, 1983.

Later, on April 8, 1988, he became the co-adjutor archbishop of Granada. This meant he was meant to take over as archbishop there. However, he was instead appointed as the Archbishop of Pamplona y Tudela on March 26, 1993. He served as archbishop there until July 31, 2007. After this, he became the Archbishop Emeritus, meaning he was retired but still held the title.

Becoming a Cardinal

On January 12, 2014, Pope Francis announced that Fernando Sebastián Aguilar would become a cardinal. This is a very high rank in the Catholic Church. He officially became a cardinal on February 22, 2014, along with 18 other church leaders.

Later Life and Death

Fernando Sebastián Aguilar passed away on January 24, 2019, in Málaga, Spain. He was 89 years old. He had suffered a serious stroke a few days before his death.
