Fernando Simón Soria is a Spanish doctor who specializes in public health and diseases. He was born on July 29, 1963. He is well-known for his important role in helping Spain deal with big health emergencies. He works as the Director of the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies. This center is part of Spain's Ministry of Health. He became a public figure during the Ebola virus disease in Spain outbreak in 2014. He also played a similar role during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fernando Simón tested positive for coronavirus on March 30, 2020.
Early Life and Education
Fernando Simón was born in Zaragoza, Spain. He studied medicine at the University of Zaragoza. After that, he chose to specialize in Public Health and Epidemiology. He learned these skills at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He also trained in a special program for disease investigation. This program was at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
Career and Public Health Work
Fernando Simón has worked in many important health roles. He was the director of a research center in Manhiça District, Mozambique. This center focused on tropical diseases. He also directed the Ntita Hospital in Burundi.
He worked at the National Center of Epidemiology (CNE) in Spain. There, he directed programs and coordinated the Health Alert and Response Unit. This was from 2003 to 2011. Today, he teaches at the National School of Public Health. He is also part of an important committee. This committee advises the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). In June 2020, he received the Emilio Castelar 2020 award for his work.
