Discover the Festival of Northern Lights

The Festival of Northern Lights is known as one of Canada's most impressive winter light shows. It transforms the city of Owen Sound into a magical wonderland. People from all over come to enjoy the festive atmosphere and the stunning light displays.

How the Festival Began

The idea for the Festival of Northern Lights came from Marie Walpole in 1987. She wanted to create a special event for the community during the winter months. Her vision grew into the large and popular festival we see today.

See the Amazing Light Displays

Imagine seeing 25 kilometers (about 15.5 miles) of light strings! That's how much light is used in this festival. There are also 400 different lighted designs. These lights decorate city streets and parks, making everything sparkle. The Festival of Northern Lights was even named one of the top 100 festivals in Ontario in 2009. This shows how special and well-loved it is.

Why the Festival Switched to LED Lights

In 2008, when the festival was 21 years old, it started to change. The organizers began replacing old incandescent lights with new LED lights. This change was made to help the environment. LED lights use much less energy than traditional bulbs. Switching to LEDs also helped the festival save money on electricity. This allowed them to make the festival even bigger and brighter for everyone to enjoy!
