How the Festival Started
The festival got its name from Festivus. This is a fun holiday celebrated on December 23rd. It was made popular by the TV show Seinfeld in an episode called The Strike. The festival founders really liked the Festivus motto: "Festivus for the rest of us."
The Festivus Film Festival began to show great independent films in Denver. It also wanted to give filmmakers a smart audience who loved indie movies.
Growing Bigger Each Year
The Festivus Film Festival grew a lot after it first started in 2008. In 2009, it became a four-day event. They also added special lounges for filmmakers and VIP guests at each movie spot.
In 2010, the festival showed 12 movies for the very first time anywhere in the world. Filmmakers came from far away places like Turkey and Australia to show their work. A new comedy festival called Laugh Track Comedy Festival also started in 2010. It grew out of Festivus's comedy short films section.
In 2012, MovieMaker Magazine named the Festivus Film Festival one of the "20 Coolest Film Festivals" in the country. This was a big honor!
