Fia-Faia in 2008

Fia-Faia is a special Christmas tradition celebrated in the towns of Bagà and Sant Julià de Cerdanyola, which are in Catalonia, Spain. It takes place every year on December 24th, which is Christmas Eve. This festival is very old, with traditions that started even before Christianity.

Because it's so unique and important, the Government of Catalonia officially recognized it as a "heritage festival of national interest" in 2010. A few years later, in 2015, Fia-Faia was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. This means it's considered a valuable cultural practice that should be protected, just like the summer solstice fire festivals in the Pyrenees mountains.

How is Fia-Faia Celebrated?

The main part of the Fia-Faia festival involves burning special torches called faies. This happens after the traditional church bells ring on Christmas Eve.

The fire for the torches starts high up in the mountains, right where the sun sets. A group of people, called fallaires, then carry this fire down into the towns. It's a beautiful sight, with many lights shining against the night sky.

Once they reach the town, the fallaires share their fire with everyone else who has a torch. As they do this, the people present sing a special chant: Fia-faia, que nostro senyor ha nascut a la paia. This means, "Let there be torches, for our Lord was born on hay." It's a joyful way to celebrate the start of Christmas.

What are the Origins of Fia-Faia?

The Fia-Faia festival has very old roots. It likely began as a ritual during the winter solstice. The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, when the sun is lowest in the sky. People might have prayed to stop the days from getting shorter and to welcome the return of longer, brighter days.

Even though the exact beginning of this celebration is lost in history, we know it was already a tradition when the town of Bagà was founded in the mid-1300s. Over time, this ancient celebration of light and the winter solstice became connected with the birth of Jesus Christ and the Christmas season.
