Fiddle Bow is a small place in southwest Hopkins County, Kentucky, United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it's a community that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. People have lived in Fiddle Bow since at least 1913.
The community got its interesting name from a black oak tree that used to grow in the area. This tree had a shape that looked just like a violin's bow!
Mining and Energy in Fiddle Bow
Fiddle Bow has a history of important mining and energy activities. People have found both coal and oil in this area.
Coal Mining Operations
Fiddle Bow was once home to a large underground coal mine. This mine was owned by the Pittsburgh and Midway Coal Company. In 1980, this mine could produce a lot of coal – about 250,000 tons every year!
There was also another type of coal mine in Fiddle Bow called a 'strip mine'. This kind of mine digs coal from the surface of the earth. In 1980, the strip mine produced 11,767 tons of coal.
The Fiddle Bow Geyser
In 1986, something amazing happened in Fiddle Bow! Water from an old mine created what locals called the "Fiddle Bow Geyser". This geyser shot water more than 50 feet (about 15 meters) into the air from a vent pipe. It was a spectacular sight for the people living there.
Oil Discovery
Besides coal, oil was also discovered in Fiddle Bow. This happened in 1968. Finding oil meant another important natural resource was available in the area.
