History of Fieldbrook Farms
Starting as Dunkirk Ice Cream
The company began in 1914. It was founded by a person named William J. Wells. He named the company Dunkirk Ice Cream. For many years, it was a family business. Four generations of the Wells family owned and ran it. This continued until 1996.
Becoming Fieldbrook Farms Inc.
In the middle of 1996, a group of investors bought Dunkirk Ice Cream. Investors are people who put money into a business hoping to make more money. This group was led by James J. Greco. They changed the company's name to Fieldbrook Farms Inc.
After this change, the company grew very quickly. Their sales doubled, reaching $100 million. They also hired more people, growing to over 500 employees.
Challenges and New Ownership
Around the early 2000s, the economy faced some problems. This was called a recession. At the same time, the cost of ingredients for ice cream went up a lot. Because of these challenges, Fieldbrook Farms had to close one of its factories. In September 2001, the company faced financial difficulties.
Later, two companies wanted to buy Fieldbrook Farms. These were Spruce Bank Enterprises, LLC, and Suiza Foods Corp.. Spruce Bank Enterprises won the bid to buy the company. In March 2002, the company's name was changed again to Fieldbrook Foods Corporation. However, they continued to use the brand name Fieldbrook Farms.
In December 2010, another company called Arbor Investments bought Fieldbrook Foods. Arbor Investments helped Fieldbrook grow its sales by almost 70%. In April 2019, Arbor Investments sold Fieldbrook Farms. It was then bought by Wells Enterprises. Wells Enterprises makes popular ice cream brands like Blue Bunny. They are the third-largest ice cream maker in the United States.
