What is a Figolla Made Of?

The Biscuit Base

The outside part of a Figolla is a delicious biscuit. It is made from simple ingredients you might find in your kitchen. These include plain flour, butter or margarine, and sugar. Eggs, a little vanilla, and lemon peel are also added. A bit of water helps bring it all together.

The Sweet Filling

After baking, Figolli are usually decorated. They often have a layer of sugar icing on top. Sometimes, melted chocolate is used instead. Many people add colorful sprinkles, also known as "hundreds-and-thousands," to make them look even more festive!

The word "Figolla" comes from an old Sicilian word. This word is "figulina," which means "figure."

It is believed that Figolli have roots in ancient Sicily. In the past, similar sweets were made there for religious reasons. They were also made to celebrate victories. For example, they might have been shaped like figures to remember winning battles against invaders.

A Maltese Tradition

While these "figulina" are not as popular in Sicily today, they have continued to grow and change in Malta. Over time, they became the beloved Figolla we know today.
