Finchville is a small community located in Shelby County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own city government. However, it is still a recognized place where people live and work.

How Finchville Got Its Name

Finchville is named after an early settler named Ludwell R. Finch. He was a blacksmith, born in 1806. Ludwell Finch moved to Shelby County in 1841. Between 1842 and 1848, he bought about 200 acres of land. He built his farm, a blacksmith shop, and a store there. Because of his shop, the area became known as "Finch's Shop." In 1876, when the government set up a post office, the name Finchville was officially chosen.

Finchville Baptist Church

The history of Finchville Baptist Church goes back a long way. Settlers in the area held worship services in their cabins as early as 1780. The church was officially started in 1799 by William Edmund Waller. By 1800, a log church and schoolhouse were built. Over the years, the church had different names. These included Plum Creek Church and Buck Creek Church. In 1891, the old brick church building was taken down. Its materials were used to build a new church in the center of Finchville. This new building became the Finchville Baptist Church. A new addition to the building was completed in 1992.

Finchville Schools

The first public school in Finchville was built in 1886. It was located where Finchville Farms Country Ham is today. In 1893, the school moved about half a mile south. All Finchville public schools have been built on this new site since then. The school built in 1893 was a three-room wooden building. A new, two-story brick schoolhouse was opened on December 23, 1915. This new building replaced the old wooden one.

The new school had eleven classrooms, a library, and an office for the principal. It had central heating and electric lights. However, it took 25 years for indoor plumbing to be added. The school also had a stable for students and teachers to use. In 1931, an auditorium and a gymnasium were added. The last high school class graduated from the school in 1949. The last middle school class graduated in 1968. Finally, the last elementary class graduated in 1975, and the building closed soon after. The school part of the building was torn down after 1975. In 1984, the school lot and gymnasium were sold to the Finchville Baptist Church. Then, in 1991, they were sold again to the Finchville Ruritan Club.

In the early 1950s, a man named Robert Doyle and his neighbors wanted clean drinking water for their community. Mr. Doyle was an engineer. He dug a lake on his farm and built a small water treatment plant. The neighbors worked together to install water pipes. By the mid-1970s, about 30 homes and businesses used Mr. Doyle's water system.

As the community grew, a larger water system was needed. In 1978, Mr. Doyle helped Shelbyville build a water line into Finchville. This new line brought water from Shelbyville to Finchville. Before this, a local water district served the area. The Shelbyville Municipal Water and Sewer Commission started planning for this new water service in 1977. They worked to get permission from property owners to lay the pipes. A public meeting was held in May 1978 at the Finchville Baptist Church. On June 30, 1978, a contract was signed to build the new pipeline. A special rate was set up to pay for the water line and the cost of bringing water from Shelbyville. This rate structure is still used today.
