History of the Museum
How the Museum Started
The Fine Arts Museum of Córdoba opened its doors in 1844. Many art museums in Spain began around this time. This was because of a big change called the desamortización. During this time, many artworks from churches and other places became available. The government decided to collect these artworks to create public museums.
Early Locations and Challenges
When it first opened, the museum was located in a building that used to be for the local government. Diego Monroy Aguilera was its first director. However, the building was not perfect for a museum. So, in 1862, the museum moved to the Hospital de la Caridad. Even there, it shared the building with other groups, which still caused some problems.
Adding Modern Art
Over time, the museum grew. In 1902, a new section was added. This part of the museum was dedicated to Modern Art. It allowed visitors to see newer styles and artists.
Management Changes
In 1984, the way the museum was managed changed. The Junta of Andalusia, which is the regional government, took over running the museum. However, the Spanish government still owns all the amazing artworks inside.
