Alejo Fernández was a Spanish painter who lived from about 1475 to 1545. He is most famous for painting a portrait of Christopher Columbus. He created this famous painting between 1531 and 1536.
About Alejo Fernández
Alejo Fernández was born in Córdoba, Spain. In Córdoba, he learned about perspective and how to create depth in his paintings. He was inspired by artists from Flanders (a region in Europe). These artists were known as the "Flemish masters."
Moving to Seville
In 1508, Alejo Fernández moved to Seville. There, he became more interested in painting people. His later paintings showed figures that looked more grand and balanced. He often included architectural elements in his artwork.
Famous Paintings
Some of his early works from his time in Córdoba include:
- Christ at the Column – This painting can be seen in the Córdoba Museum.
- Triptych of the Last Supper – This artwork is in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza.
Both of these early paintings show the influence of an artist named Donato Bramante.
Later, after moving to Seville, his paintings started to show influences from Italian artists. These included Pinturicchio and Raphael. Some of his important later works are:
- Virgin of the Rose – This painting is in the church of St. Anne in Seville.
- The Virgin of the Navigators – This famous work is located in the Alcázar of Seville.
Alejo Fernández passed away in Seville around the year 1545.
