Alejo Fernández was a Spanish painter who lived from about 1475 to 1545. He is most famous for painting a portrait of Christopher Columbus. He created this famous painting between 1531 and 1536.

About Alejo Fernández

Alejo Fernández was born in Córdoba, Spain. In Córdoba, he learned about perspective and how to create depth in his paintings. He was inspired by artists from Flanders (a region in Europe). These artists were known as the "Flemish masters."

Moving to Seville

In 1508, Alejo Fernández moved to Seville. There, he became more interested in painting people. His later paintings showed figures that looked more grand and balanced. He often included architectural elements in his artwork.
