A Young Artist's Journey
Pablo de Céspedes came from a respected family in Spain. His father, Alonso Céspedes, was from a noble family. His mother, Olaya de Arroya, was from Alcolea de Torote. Pablo grew up in the home of his great-uncle, Francisco Lopez de Aponte, who was a church official in Cordoba. There, Pablo received a good education.
When he was eighteen, in 1556, Pablo went to the Universidad Complutense in Alcalá de Henares. He studied different languages and theology, which is the study of religious beliefs. Later, he moved to Rome, Italy, to study painting. He learned from a famous artist named Federico Zuccari.
Time in Italy
Pablo de Céspedes was in Rome in 1559. He was helping a church leader from Toledo, Archbishop Carranza de Miranda, with some important discussions at the Vatican. During this time, Pablo wrote a letter that was not careful with its words. This letter caused some trouble for him. Because of this, he probably stayed in Italy for many years. He did not return to Spain until it was safe for him to do so.
He lived in Italy for more than 20 years. During this time, he became a well-known artist. The only artworks from this period that we can still see today are his beautiful wall paintings, called frescoes. He painted these in the Bonfili chapel at the Santa Trinità dei Monti church in Rome.
Return to Spain
