A Look Back in Time

Long ago, Finemere Wood was part of a huge forest called Bernwood Forest. This was a medieval royal hunting forest, meaning kings and queens used to hunt there many centuries ago! The wood has a long history, and some of its trees have been growing for a very long time.

Amazing Wildlife

Most of Finemere Wood is filled with old pedunculate oak trees. These are a common type of oak tree found in the UK. These ancient trees provide a perfect home for many creatures.

You can find special butterflies here, like the rare wood white and black hairstreak butterflies. They love living among the old oak trees and the flowers that grow beneath them.

Besides the trees, there are also grassy areas and bushes. The small River Ray flows through here, adding to the different habitats. This mix of water, trees, and open land helps many different plants and animals to thrive.
