The Finley railway station is an old train station located in Finley, Australia. It used to be a busy railway station. Today, it is a special place that is protected because of its history.
This former station is now home to the Finley Pioneer Railway Museum. Here, you can see many old items from the railway's past. The museum is run by a group called the Finley Pioneer Rail Committee. They offer tours to help visitors learn all about the station and its history.
Station History
The Finley railway station first opened in 1898. It was an important stop on the Narrandera-Tocumwal railway. For many years, Finley was the end of the railway line. This meant trains would stop here and turn around.
In 1914, the railway line was extended further. This connected Finley to Tocumwal. The station played a big part in connecting towns and helping trade in the region.
What You Can See at the Station
The main building at Finley station was built in 1898. It is made of timber and shows how pioneer stations looked back then. The roof is made of corrugated iron.
You can also see other old structures at the site. There is a timber shed that was used for storing goods. A large 5-tonne gantry crane from 1898 is also still there. This crane was used to lift heavy items on and off trains.
The station platform is made of concrete. It has been changed over time. Originally, it was at ground level. Later, it was raised to be at the same height as the train carriage doors.
Why Finley Station is Special
The Finley Railway Precinct is very important. It is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. This means it is a protected historical site.
It is considered rare because it is one of the few pioneer stations where the building and platform were first built at ground level. The station shows how railway construction changed over time. It also tells the story of how railways expanded into new areas.
The site still has many of its original parts. This includes the goods shed, the gantry crane, and a lamp room. These features help us understand what railway stations were like in the late 1800s.
