Firesong is an exciting fantasy book written by William Nicholson. It was first published in 2002. This book is the third and final part of Wind On Fire, a popular fantasy trilogy (a series of three books). It continues the amazing journey of the Manth people as they search for their true home.
Contents
The Search for a New Home
At the beginning of Firesong, the Manth people are trying to figure out what to do next. Their old enemy, the Mastery, has been defeated. Now, they are alone and need to find a new place to live. They don't have a clear destination and are running low on food.
Ira Hath, who is Kestrel and Bowman's mother, is a very important prophetess. She has special visions that guide the Manth people. She sees their true homeland in her visions. As they travel, Ira becomes weaker because her prophecies are taking a lot out of her. She knows that guiding her people will eventually lead to her death.
Bowman's Special Training
Bowman is waiting for a special call from someone named Sirene. He knows he might have to make a big sacrifice to save his people and the whole world. But before he can do this, he needs to be trained. His teacher is the great Albard, who used to be the Master of the now-ruined Mastery.
The journey to meet Albard is long and difficult. Bowman's training is very tough, especially with such a mysterious teacher. Jumper, a unique Singer who can change forms and personalities, comes to get Bowman. Jumper agrees to let Kestrel, Bowman's sister, come along too.
Kestrel's Brave Sacrifice
Later in the story, a big secret is revealed. It turns out that Kestrel is the one who is meant to give her life. She has learned a lot from Albard's teachings during their journey.
Bowman, on the other hand, is actually the Meeting place. This means he is the point where the world's great evil and great kindness will meet and cancel each other out. This is because he was once part of the Zars, an army of the Morah (which is like the spirit of all evil). He is also one of the Singer people, as he has been trained in their ways.
When the Manth people finally reach their homeland, Ira's life ends. She has fulfilled her destiny. Kestrel also ends her life with all the other Singers. They sing the "firesong" together. This song destroys the Morah, giving humanity a fresh start. It also allows the Manth people to finally settle in their true homeland.
A New Beginning
The book ends with an epilogue, which is like a short look into the future, about eight years later. The Manth people are now settled and happy in their new home. Many characters have gotten married and started families.
Bowman and Sisi, who was the princess of Gang and Kestrel's best friend, are now the rulers of Gang because of Sisi's birthright. The story finishes with Pinto and Mumpo getting engaged. Everyone in the Manth community is finally happy and at peace.
