The First Callahan Building is a cool old building in Lewiston, Maine. You can find it at 276 Lisbon Street. This building was finished in 1892. A famous local architect named George M. Coombs designed it. It's a brick building with a special style called Renaissance Revival.

The Callahan brothers built it as part of a big project. They owned a store that sold things for gentlemen. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This means it's an important historical place.

What is the First Callahan Building?

The First Callahan Building is on the east side of Lisbon Street. This street is the main shopping area in downtown Lewiston. It stands right next to the Second Callahan Block. It is also across from the Lower Lisbon Street Historic District. That area has some of Lewiston's oldest shops.

How Does the Building Look?

The building has four stories and is made of red brick. It has a flat roof with a fancy edge called a cornice. This cornice sticks out and has decorative brackets. Below the cornice is a brick design called an entablature.

The front of the building faces Lisbon Street. It has nine sections, or "bays," for windows and doors. Metal pillars, called pilasters, divide the first floor. Brick pilasters are used on the floors above.

What's Inside the Building?

The first floor has three modern shops. The upper floors have windows that slide up and down, called sash windows. These windows have flat tops and granite sills. You can get to the upper floors through an entrance on Chestnut Street. The Chestnut Street side looks just as detailed as the Lisbon Street side.

Who Built the First Callahan Building?

The famous local architect George M. Coombs designed this building. He designed many buildings across northern and western Maine. It was built in 1892 for T. F. and Eugene Callahan. They were brothers who owned a store selling hats, trunks, and other items for gentlemen.

What Was the Building Used For?

The building first had shops on the ground floor. Offices and homes were on the floors above. Today, the upper levels have been updated to be only homes. The Callahan brothers did very well with their business. They were able to build the building next door in 1911. That building was designed by Coombs' son-in-law, Eugene Gibbs.
