The Sanctuary is a special building in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. It's located at 1519 East Denny Way and 1841 16th Avenue. This building used to be a historic church called First Church of Christ, Scientist, Seattle. Today, it has been changed into modern homes called townhouses.

A Look Back: The Church's Story

This beautiful church was designed in a style called Classical Revival. This means it looked like ancient Greek and Roman buildings, with grand columns and balanced shapes. It was built using a strong, light-colored stone called Bedford limestone. Construction on this particular church building started around 1906.

Early Days of the Congregation

The First Church of Christ, Scientist, congregation began in August 1896. For a while, they met in different rented places. They built their first church building at 6th Avenue and Marion Street. This first church was ready for its first service on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1901. However, the congregation grew quickly, and they soon needed a bigger space.

Building a New Home

In November 1906, the church bought the land on Denny Way. By August 1908, services were held in a temporary wooden building. This temporary structure was built right on top of the new church's completed foundation. The main church building was finished around 1909.

Becoming a Landmark and New Beginnings

On January 17, 1977, the city of Seattle recognized the building as a City of Seattle historic landmark. This means it's an important building that should be protected because of its history and design.

In 2006, the church congregation decided to move to a more active part of the city, the South Lake Union neighborhood. They sold the East Denny Way building to a company that turned it into the townhouse project known as The Sanctuary. The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Seattle, is still an active church today. They now hold their services at 900 Thomas Street.
