The Sanctuary is a cool building in the Capitol Hill area of Seattle, Washington. It's located at 1519 East Denny Way and 1841 16th Avenue. This building used to be an old church called the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Seattle. Now, it has been turned into modern homes called townhouses.

From Church to Homes: The Sanctuary's Story

This building was designed in a style called Classical Revival. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek or Roman buildings, with grand columns and a formal feel. The church was built using strong Bedford limestone.

Building the First Church

Work on the church building started around 1906. The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Seattle, was founded earlier, in August 1896. Before this big building, the church held its services in different rented places.

They built their first church building at 6th Avenue and Marion Street. It was ready for its first service on Easter Sunday, April 7, 1901. However, the church quickly grew too big for this space.

Moving to Denny Way

In November 1906, the church bought the land on Denny Way. By August 1908, services began in a temporary wooden building. This temporary structure was built right on top of the new church's completed foundation.

A Historic Landmark Building

On January 17, 1977, this beautiful building was officially named a City of Seattle historic landmark. This means it's an important part of Seattle's history and should be protected.

The Church Moves On

In 2006, the church decided to move to a new area called South Lake Union. They wanted to be in a more active part of the city. So, the building on East Denny Way was sold to a company that develops properties.

This company then turned the old church into the townhouse project we now know as The Sanctuary. The First Church of Christ, Scientist, Seattle, is still active today. They now hold their services at 900 Thomas Street.
