The First Congregational Church of Blandford is a very old and important church building. People in Blandford, Massachusetts, often call it the White Church because of its color. It is located at 4 North Street in the middle of Blandford. This church was built in 1822. It is a great example of a building made in the Federal style. A famous builder named Isaac Damon designed it. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Today, a local group takes care of it. They use it for special events and gatherings.

About the Church Building

The White Church in Blandford sits on a small hill. It is just northwest of the town center. This building is made of wood and has two and a half stories. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with wooden boards.

Special Design Features

The front of the church has a special design. It has five sections, and the middle three stick out a bit. This part has a triangular shape at the top. The corners of the building look like flat columns. These are called pilasters. The middle sections on the ground floor each have a door. Above these doors are half-round windows. The windows on the second floor also have these special half-round tops.

The Church Tower

A tall tower rises from the front of the church. The first part of the tower is square. It has a bell tower with round openings for the sound to come out. The next two parts of the tower are shaped like octagons. They get smaller as they go up. These parts have columns on their corners. The very top of the tower has a curved, dome-shaped roof. A weathervane sits on top of it.

History of the White Church

The church was built in 1822. A local builder named Isaac Damon constructed it. He used ideas from designs by other famous architects. These architects were Charles Bulfinch and Asher Benjamin.

Changes Over Time

When the church was first built, the pulpit was near the front door. This meant that anyone arriving late would be easily seen by everyone. Later, during some updates, the pulpit was moved. It was placed at the back of the building instead. In the 1990s, the church was fixed up and restored. The Blandford Historical Society then took ownership of it.
