What is the National Register of Historic Places?

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the United States' historic places worth saving. It's like a special hall of fame for buildings, structures, objects, sites, and districts that are important to American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture.

When a place is added to the Register, it means it's recognized for its historical value. This can help protect it from being changed or torn down, especially if federal money is involved in a project nearby. It also makes these places eligible for certain tax breaks or grants to help with their upkeep.

National Historic Landmarks

Among the many places on the National Register, some are even more special. These are called National Historic Landmarks. They are places that have been recognized by the Secretary of the Interior as having national importance. This means they are key sites that tell a big part of the story of the United States. Hampden County is proud to have three of these very important landmarks!

Historic Districts

Sometimes, it's not just one building that's important, but a whole group of buildings or an area. These are called Historic Districts. They are neighborhoods or parts of towns where many buildings together show a certain period of history or a style of architecture. Protecting a historic district helps keep the unique look and feel of that area alive.

Historic Places in Hampden County

Hampden County is full of amazing historic places! While Springfield has many, this list focuses on the other towns. You'll find old homes, factories, churches, and even entire neighborhoods that have been preserved. Each one has a unique story to tell about how people lived, worked, and built communities in Massachusetts long ago.

These places help us understand our past and appreciate the history all around us. They are like living museums, showing us what life was like in different times.
