Story of First Kid
Sam Simms' New Job
The movie begins with Sam Simms, played by Sinbad. He is a Secret Service agent. His boss, Wilkes (Robert Guillaume), gives him a new job. Sam has to protect Luke Davenport (Brock Pierce). Luke is the 13-year-old son of President Paul Davenport (James Naughton).
Luke's Troubles
Luke is a bit rebellious and often gets into trouble. His behavior caused another agent, Woods (Timothy Busfield), to lose his job. Sam doesn't really want this assignment. He hopes it will help him get a better job protecting the President later. At first, Sam and Luke don't get along at all. Luke keeps misbehaving.
A Growing Friendship
One day, Luke gets into a fight with the school bully, Rob (Zachery Ty Bryan). Even though Luke didn't start the fight, his parents punish him. They are worried about how it looks during the President's re-election campaign. Sam feels bad for Luke. He remembers feeling lonely when he was a teenager too. Sam and Luke start to become friends.
Sam used to be a boxer. He agrees to sneak Luke out of the White House to teach him how to fight. This is against the rules set by Morton (Art LaFleur), the chief of security.
The School Dance
Luke really wants to ask Katie (Erin Williby), a girl he likes, to the school dance. With Sam's help, he finally does! Sam breaks the rules again and takes Luke to the dance. At the dance, Rob the bully tries to attack Luke again. But this time, Luke knows how to defend himself and stands up to Rob.
A Dangerous Plan
After the dance, other Secret Service agents arrive and take Luke back to the White House. Sam gets fired because he broke the rules. Luke is very upset, thinking Sam has left him. Luke is put under house arrest and has a tracking device on him. He gets advice from an online friend, Mongoose12, on how to escape. Mongoose12 tells Luke to meet him at a local mall.
Luke agrees to the plan. But it turns out that Mongoose12 is actually the former agent Woods! Woods then takes Luke away.
The Rescue Mission
When Luke goes missing, Sam is given another chance to find him. Sam gets help from his friend Harold (Tomas Arana), who owns a spy shop. Harold uses his skills to quickly track Luke to the mall.
At the mall, Woods confronts Sam. Woods says he first planned to return Luke to the President to get his job back. But now, he wants to hurt Luke. He blames Luke for losing his job and even his wife. Woods tries to shoot Sam, but Sam hides. When Woods runs out of bullets, Sam uses his boxing skills to stop him.
A Hero's Choice
Other agents arrive at the mall. Woods tries to shoot Luke with another gun. But Sam bravely jumps in front of Luke and gets shot in the arm instead. Woods is then stopped and arrested by the Secret Service.
Sam is offered a job protecting the President directly. But he turns it down. He decides to stay with Luke full-time. He also wants to spend more time with Luke's biology teacher, with whom he has started a romantic relationship.

In the movie, Sonny plays himself as a Congressman visiting the White House. Sam Simms accidentally bumps into him outside the Oval Office.
First Kid is also special because it's the only major movie where a sitting President appeared as himself. Bill Clinton was the President at the time, and he makes a cameo appearance in the film.
