The First McGillicuddy Block is an old and important building in Lewiston, Maine. It is located at 133 Lisbon Street. This building was finished in 1895. It was built for Daniel J. McGillicuddy, a well-known person in the area. The building was designed by a local architect named Jefferson Coburn. It is one of only two buildings by him that are still standing in Lewiston. The First McGillicuddy Block is a great example of late Victorian architecture. This means it shows the building styles popular in the late 1800s. Because of its history and design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This list helps protect important places in the United States.

What the Building Looks Like

The First McGillicuddy Block stands on a busy corner in downtown Lewiston. It is at the northwest corner of Lisbon and Ash Streets. This building has four stories and is made of brick. It also has fancy decorations made of metal and stone.

Main Features and Design

The front of the building faces Lisbon Street. It has three main sections, called "bays." The corner section is special because it is rounded at the top. This rounded part has a cool, cone-shaped roof. The windows on the building are all different shapes. Some are large and round at the top, like an arch. Others have a flatter, segmented arch. All the arches around the windows are highlighted. They use orange bricks and special granite stones called "keystones."

Special Details and Materials

Just below the roof, there is a decorative metal border. This border is called a "cornice." Below that, there is a line of orange bricks. This brick line is called a "beltcourse." The shops on the ground floor have been updated over time. The side of the building that faces Ash Street is simpler. But it still has two interesting "oriel windows." These windows stick out from the building. They are two stories tall and are found on the second and third floors.

Who Built and Designed It

The First McGillicuddy Block was designed by Jefferson Coburn. He was a famous architect in Lewiston. Another building he designed nearby is the Osgood Building. That is the only other commercial building by him still standing in the city.

Daniel J. McGillicuddy's Role

The building was built for Daniel J. McGillicuddy. He was a very important person in Lewiston. He worked as a lawyer. He also served in the state government. Later, he became the mayor of Lewiston. He even served in the United States Congress. This means he helped make laws for the whole country.
