The Osgood Building is a really old and special building located at 129 Lisbon Street in Lewiston, Maine. It was built way back in 1893. This building is unique because it's one of only two business buildings still standing that were designed by a famous local architect named Jefferson Coburn. It's also the only building in Maine known to use special white bricks imported all the way from England! Because it's so important, the Osgood Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

What Makes the Osgood Building Special?

The Osgood Building stands on the west side of Lisbon Street. This street is the main shopping area in Lewiston. The building is made of strong white bricks. These bricks came from Leeds in the United Kingdom, which is pretty cool!

Looking at the Building's Design

The front of the building looks the same on both sides. It has groups of three windows on each side. A single window is in the middle. Tall, thin pillars, called pilasters, go all the way up the building. They have fancy tops between the first and second floors. These tops are part of a decorative stone band.

The main door is set back in the middle. It has a rounded archway made of red shiny bricks. The shop windows on either side of the door are also interesting. Each has a big window in the middle with two smaller windows next to it. These windows are set in arched openings. They also have special cast frames with a decorative stone piece above the big window.

This same style is used on the second and third floors. But the details are a little different. The fourth floor has nine smaller, round-arched windows.

Who Built the Osgood Building?

The Osgood Building was constructed in 1893. It was built for H.A. Osgood, a jeweler. He had a business at this spot for a very long time.

The building was designed by Jefferson Coburn. He was a well-known architect in the area. The only other business building he designed that is still standing is the First McGillicuddy Block. This building is just south of the Osgood Building. Coburn was famous for his unique and varied designs.

The person who actually built the Osgood Building was E.R. Desjardins. He was an immigrant who came from Quebec.
