Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The First Nations Summit is an important group for First Nations people in British Columbia, Canada. It was started in 1992. This organization helps represent the interests of First Nations governments. They work especially with groups involved in the treaty process.

Understanding the First Nations Summit

The First Nations Summit acts like a voice for many First Nations communities. It was created after the British Columbia Treaty Process began. This process helps First Nations and the government make agreements called treaties.

The Summit represents First Nation band governments. These are the local governments for First Nations communities. In 2007, the Summit represented 111 of the 194 bands in British Columbia. This meant they spoke for over 60% of the First Nations population. By 2023, about 150 First Nations were part of the Summit.

Working Together: The First Nations Leadership Council

The First Nations Summit also works closely with other important groups. Its leaders join with leaders from the BC section of the Assembly of First Nations. They also work with the Union of BC Indian Chiefs. Together, these leaders form a group called the First Nations Leadership Council of BC. This council helps guide and speak for First Nations across British Columbia.
