The First Universalist Church is a really old and special building in Kingston, New Hampshire. People in town often call it the Church on the Plains. It was built way back in 1879! A famous architect named C. Willis Damon designed it. This church is a great example of a building style called Stick/Eastlake architecture. It was added to a list of important historic places, called the National Register of Historic Places, in 1979. Today, the local historical society takes care of it.

What is the Church on the Plains?

This historic church building is right in the middle of Kingston. You can find it on the east side of the big town common. It's at the corner of Main Street and Cemetery Lane. The church is made of wood and has a pointy roof.

What Does It Look Like?

The church has a tall, square tower on its front corner. This tower has four parts, or stages. The first part has two windows with a cool stenciled design. The second part has unique windows shaped like four-leaf clovers! The third part of the tower has openings for the church bell. The very top part has clock faces on all four sides. A tall steeple rises above the clocks.

Next to the tower, there's a small porch. Its roof is held up by big wooden supports. Above the porch, in the triangular part of the roof, there's a special three-part window. The roof's peak also has fancy wooden decorations, which is part of the Stick style. Inside the church, you can see beautiful stencil designs on the walls. We don't know who made them!

Who Built This Church?

The First Universalist Church was built in 1879. It was designed by an architect named C. Willis Damon. He was from Haverhill, Massachusetts. Damon was a very important architect in his time. He designed many buildings, including factories and the old high school in Haverhill. He also designed a building for an academy in Tilton and a courthouse in Portsmouth.

The church stopped being used for services in 1954. Later, in 1974, it was given to the local historical society. Now, they help keep this amazing old building safe for everyone to enjoy!
