On Saturday, March 4, 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt became the 32nd President of the United States. This important event is called a presidential inauguration. It marked the start of his first term as president. John Nance Garner also began his term as Vice President on this day.
A Historic Day: The Last March 4th Inauguration
This inauguration was special for another reason. It was the very last time a U.S. president was sworn into office on March 4. After this, the date for inaugurations changed. All presidents since Roosevelt have taken their oath on January 20. This change was made by the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. It helped shorten the time between the election and the new president taking office.
