Firwood is a small community located in Clackamas County, Oregon, in the United States. It is an "unincorporated area," which means it's a group of homes and buildings that are not officially part of a city or town.
Where is Firwood Located?
Firwood is found about three miles southeast of the town of Sandy. It is very close to U.S. Route 26, a major highway. The place where U.S. Route 26 and Firwood Road meet is known by a special local name: Shortys Corner.
Why is it Called Firwood?
The name "Firwood" is quite descriptive! It comes from the many Douglas fir and true fir trees that grow in the area. These tall, evergreen trees are a big part of the natural beauty around Firwood.
Firwood's History
Firwood once had its own post office. It was opened in 1895. However, the post office closed its doors in 1906. Today, people living in Firwood use a Sandy mailing address for their mail.
Firwood Today
Even though it's a small community, Firwood has a local school. Firwood Elementary School serves the younger students in the area. This school is part of the Oregon Trail School District.
