The Fish River Canyon is a huge natural wonder located in the south of Namibia. It's the biggest canyon in Africa and the second most popular place for tourists to visit in Namibia. Imagine a giant ditch about 160 kilometers (100 miles) long, up to 27 kilometers (17 miles) wide, and nearly 550 meters (1,800 feet) deep! That's how big the Fish River Canyon is.
The Fish River is the longest river inside Namibia. It has carved this deep canyon into a high, dry, and rocky plateau. The river usually flows only during the late summer, causing floods. For the rest of the year, it becomes a series of long, narrow pools of water. At the lower end of the Fish River Canyon, you can find the hot springs resort of Ai-Ais.
Public viewing points are located near Hobas. This is a campsite about 70 kilometers (43 miles) north of Ai-Ais. This part of the canyon is also part of the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. The other 90 kilometers (56 miles) of this amazing canyon are privately owned.
