Fisk is a small place in Adair County, Iowa, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it's a settlement without its own local government. Sometimes, it's even called a ghost town because it's not as busy as it once was.

The Story of Fisk

This map from 1903 shows where Fisk was located in Adair County.

Fisk was started in 1870. It was located in the middle of Richland Township.

Early Days and Growth

The first post office in Fisk opened in 1870. This was an important step for the community. By 1901, Fisk had grown quite a bit. It was home to the Blue Grass Creamery, where milk was processed. There was also a school for local children. And, of course, the Fisk Post Office was still running.

Changes Over Time

Things started to change for Fisk when Rural Free Delivery began. This new system meant mail could be delivered directly to people's homes. Because of this, the Fisk Post Office closed down.

In 1918, Fisk was described as a small place. It was about 10 miles southwest of Greenfield, the main town in the county. The closest train station and bank were in Orient, about 6 miles west. Mail was brought to Fisk by rural delivery from Orient. At this time, Fisk still had two general stores. These stores were run by A.B. Creighton and J.J. Perkins.

Population and Last Services

Fisk's population was small and changed over the years. In 1902, 37 people lived there. By 1924, the number dropped to 28. Then, in 1940, the population went back up to 37. Even in 1951, a school and a church were still open in Fisk. This shows that the community kept some important services for a long time.
