Fitzsimmons, Alberta facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Fitzsimmons is a small, named place in northwest Alberta, Canada. It is not a town or city with its own government, but rather a community area. It is located within the County of Grande Prairie No. 1. Fitzsimmons is about 30 kilometers (19 miles) northeast of Grande Prairie.

History of Fitzsimmons

The area known as Fitzsimmons began to form around a school. This school was part of the Fitzsimmons School District No. 4500. It was officially approved on July 7, 1930. The school served the area north of Bezanson and west of the Smoky River.

The community was named after Scotty Fitzsimmons. He was an early settler, also called a homesteader, in the district. Homesteaders were people who settled on and farmed land given to them by the government.

School and Post Office

Two years after the school district was approved, a post office was opened. This happened in 1932. The post office was located in the home of C. Milnar.

The one-room school in Fitzsimmons closed its doors in 1956. After that, students from the area were taken by bus to the school in Bezanson. The post office also closed a few years earlier, in 1951.

Today, there are no public buildings left in Fitzsimmons. These buildings once marked the center of this small community.
