The Christmas Mystery Begins
The story kicks off when Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and Timmy return to Kirrin Cottage for their Christmas holidays. George's Uncle Quentin is very busy working on a secret project in his study. He decides to hire a tutor, Mr. Roland, to help Julian and Dick catch up on their schoolwork. George also has to join the lessons because she's a bit behind after her first term at boarding school.
Exploring Kirrin Farm
The day before lessons start, the children visit the old Kirrin Farm. Mr. and Mrs. Sanders run the farm. Mrs. Sanders tells them that two artists from London have rented a part of the house for three weeks. The children love exploring! They find a secret hole and a cupboard with a hidden back. While looking in a wall, Dick discovers an old book and a linen map. The map has strange Latin words written on it.
Unraveling the Secret Map
The children take the mysterious map back to Kirrin Cottage. Julian thinks it shows a "secret way," but he can't figure out the Latin words. George is a bit annoyed, but Julian shows the map to Mr. Roland. The tutor confirms it's about a "secret way" and mentions an "east-facing room with eight wooden panels."
Trouble at Kirrin Cottage
Things get tense when Timmy, the brave dog, attacks Mr. Roland and is sent outside to his kennel. Soon after, Uncle Quentin's important secret papers go missing! George immediately suspects Mr. Roland, but the others aren't so sure at first.
The Secret Way and the Thieves
The Famous Five soon discover the "secret way" they read about on the map. It turns out to be in Uncle Quentin's laboratory! This secret passage leads right to the room where the two artists from London are staying at Kirrin Farm.
Catching the Culprits
By accident, Anne finds Uncle Quentin's stolen papers in the artists' room. The children try to escape through the secret passage, but the thieves almost catch them! Luckily, George threatens to let Timmy loose, and the thieves back off. The Five also realize that Mr. Roland was working with the artists. They manage to hold Mr. Roland and the two artists in a room until the police arrive. The police then arrest the bad guys, and the mystery is solved!
