The Story of Five Run Away Together
This book follows the adventures of Julian, Dick, and Anne. They arrive at Kirrin Cottage to spend their holidays with their cousin George (whose real name is Georgina). They are excited to explore Kirrin Island, which belongs to George.
A Change in Plans
Their fun holiday plans are interrupted when Aunt Fanny becomes unwell. She and Uncle Quentin have to leave for a hospital far away. A temporary cook, Mrs Stick, comes to look after the children. She brings her husband and their son, Edgar. The children and the Sticks quickly dislike each other.
Mrs Stick even tries to harm George's beloved dog, Timmy. This makes George decide to run away to Kirrin Island. Julian discovers her plan and convinces her to let the other children join her.
Mystery on Kirrin Island
Once on the island, the children find clues that someone else has been there. They start to suspect that smugglers might be using the island. Soon, they discover children's toys and clothes, which makes them think something serious is happening.
The Famous Five soon learn that the Sticks have kidnapped a young girl named Jennifer Armstrong. They are holding her on the island to demand money for her return. The children bravely outsmart the Sticks. They rescue Jennifer and take her to the police.
The Rescue and Aftermath
The police are very surprised to see Jennifer, as she is a child "the whole country is looking for." The police go back to the island with the children. They manage to catch and arrest the Sticks. Jennifer's father is very grateful. He allows her to stay for a week with her new friends on Kirrin Island.
TV Show Differences
Five Run Away Together has been adapted into TV series. The stories in the TV shows are a bit different from the book.
1970s TV Series Changes
In the 1970s TV series, Mrs Stick's husband arrives with her at Kirrin Cottage. In the book, he only appears later when Julian tries to get food. Also, Aunt Fanny is not sick in the TV show. She leaves to care for a sick relative. The TV series also changes the kidnapped girl's story. Instead of Jennifer Armstrong, the Sticks kidnap George and Dick. Julian and Anne then have to rescue them.
1990s TV Series Changes
The 1990s TV series also has some differences. Jennifer's father is General Armstrong, who knows about the Gemini project. Jennifer's kidnapping is shown differently. She is taken from her bed, tied up, and left in a cave. The Five rescue her and then tie up Edgar, the Sticks' son. In the book, Jennifer is kidnapped while playing in her garden.
In this TV series, Aunt Fanny (called Aunt Francis) is not sick. She visits a friend who broke her leg.
