What Happens in the Story?
A Strange New Home
The story begins during the Easter school holidays. Julian, Dick, and Anne are staying with their cousin George at her home, Kirrin Cottage. But then, something unexpected happens! A big tree falls on the house, making it unsafe to live in. So, the four children are sent to a new place called Smuggler's Top.
Smuggler's Top is a very unusual house. It sits on top of an old hill near the coast and is partly surrounded by a dangerous marsh. The house belongs to Mr. Lenoir, who is a scientist and a friend of George's father, Uncle Quentin.
New Friends and Hidden Secrets
When they arrive, the children meet Pierre "Sooty" Lenoir, who is Mr. Lenoir's stepson and a schoolmate of Julian and Dick. They also meet Sooty's half-sister, Marybelle. Mr. Lenoir doesn't like dogs, so George has to hide her beloved dog, Timmy, in a secret passage within the house.
One night, Julian and Dick see a mysterious light flashing from the house's tower. They suspect it might be Block, the house's strange manservant who seems to be deaf. But when they check, Block appears to be sound asleep in his room. This makes the mystery even deeper!
The Smugglers' Plan
Soon, Uncle Quentin comes to stay at Smuggler's Top. He plans to sell Mr. Lenoir an idea for draining the marsh. This is a big problem for a local smuggler named Mr. Barling. He fears that if the marsh is drained, his secret smuggling business will be ruined.
Because of this, Mr. Barling decides to take drastic action. He kidnaps Uncle Quentin and Sooty! The children are worried and determined to find them.
Timmy to the Rescue!
The Famous Five discover another secret underground passage. This passage leads them right to where Sooty and Uncle Quentin are being held captive! Mr. Barling and his helper, who turns out to be Block, are the kidnappers.
Just when things look bad, Timmy, George's brave dog, bursts out and attacks the kidnappers! This gives Uncle Quentin, Sooty, and the children a chance to escape. The police arrive quickly and capture the smugglers.
Outside the tunnels, there's one last scary moment. Timmy almost gets sucked into the dangerous marsh, but Uncle Quentin and Julian quickly save him. The adventure ends with everyone safe and the smugglers caught!
