Flávio Rodrigues da Costa (born September 14, 1906 – died November 22, 1999) was a famous Brazilian football player and manager. He led many important clubs in Brazil, like Vasco da Gama and Flamengo. He also managed teams in other countries, such as Colo-Colo in Chile and FC Porto in Portugal.

Costa was the coach for the Brazilian national team during the 1950 FIFA World Cup. This tournament is remembered for Brazil's surprising loss to Uruguay in the final match. After this, some people were disappointed with his coaching. However, he returned to manage the Brazilian team again in 1955 and 1956. He passed away in Rio de Janeiro in November 1999.

Playing Career: Flávio Costa as a Player

Flávio Costa played football from 1926 to 1936. He mostly played as a midfielder for the Flamengo club. During his time as a player, he played 145 matches and scored 15 goals.

A special moment in his playing career was when he helped Flamengo win the state championship of Rio de Janeiro in 1927. From September 1934, he took on a new role, becoming a player-manager. This meant he was both playing on the team and helping to coach it at the same time.

Coaching Career: Leading Top Teams

Flávio Costa had a very long and successful career as a football manager. He coached many different clubs and even the Brazilian national team multiple times. His teams won several important championships.

He managed Flamengo for many years, winning the Campeonato Carioca (Rio de Janeiro state championship) several times in the 1930s and 1940s. He also led Vasco da Gama to great success, including winning the Campeonato Carioca and the South American Championship of Champions Clubs in 1948.

Brazil National Team Coach

Flávio Costa was the coach of the Brazilian national team for the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Brazil was the host country and everyone expected them to win. However, they lost the final match to Uruguay, which was a big surprise for the whole country.

Despite this difficult moment, he was still a respected coach. He returned to lead the national team again in 1955 and 1956. He also coached the Brazilian team when they won the Copa América in 1949.

Coaching Abroad and Later Years

Beyond Brazil, Flávio Costa also coached teams in other countries. He managed FC Porto in Portugal and Colo-Colo in Chile. He continued coaching different clubs in Brazil, including São Paulo and Bangu, until 1970. His long career showed his dedication to football.
