Bangu Atlético Clube, often called Bangu, is a professional association football club from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The team plays in the Bangu neighborhood. They compete in Série D, which is the fourth level of Brazilian football. They also play in the Campeonato Carioca, the top league in Rio de Janeiro state.

Bangu has played in the top national league, Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, many times. They even finished as runner-up in 1985. Their home field is the Estadio Moça Bonita. This stadium can hold about 15,000 fans.

Club History: How Bangu Started

The club began at the Fábrica Bangu (Bangu Factory) in Rio de Janeiro. Some British workers, especially Thomas Donohoe, brought football to the factory. They organized the first football match ever played in Brazil! In December 1903, Andrew Procter suggested starting a club. He saw how much his co-workers loved the game.

The club was officially founded on April 17, 1904. It was named Bangu Atlético Clube. Bangu was special because it was the first football club in Brazil to have black and mixed-race players.

Winning Championships

In 1933, Bangu won its first state championship, the Campeonato Carioca. This was a big moment for the club.

In 1966, Bangu won its second state championship. This game was played at the huge Maracana, with over 120,000 fans! They beat Flamengo 3-0. The game is remembered for a big fight between players.

In 1967, Bangu even played in the United States. They represented the city of Houston as the Houston Stars in the United Soccer Association. They had a good season with four wins, four draws, and four losses. They also had the most fans at their games, with about 19,000 people per match.

In 1985, Bangu had a fantastic year. They finished as the runner-up in the Campeonato Brasileiro, the national league. This success allowed them to play in the Copa Libertadores the next year. The Copa Libertadores is a very important tournament for South American clubs.

In 2004, Bangu moved down to the second level of the Campeonato Carioca. But they worked hard and won the second level in 2008. This win brought them back to the top state league in 2009.
